Author Biography

Hikaru moved to England from Japan in 1989 to study constructed textiles and after completing her studies at Middlesex University she developed new and innovative textiles with designers including Tom Dixon, TopShop and projects for Barneys, Browns, Paul Smith women, Takashimaya New York and many others. Hikaru has participated in many shows and exhibitions all over the world, and her work is sold in boutiques and department stores in London, Paris, New York and Tokyo. Other publications include Darning: Repair, make, mend, Creative Mending and Made in France: Knitting.

‘Among the treasured materials that I use are handkerchiefs received as souvenirs in the past, or clothes once worn by loved ones, bringing evocative memories with them, such as the clothes your child wore when they were little. It’s hard to put scissors into your memories and feel that you are destroying these precious fabrics, but then, not to do anything with them seems such a waste. Cutting a 10cm square of the treasured cloth is a great way to make a gentle start’.
